Since the Han Dynasty (206 BC-AD 220), the Silk Road, which started from ancient Chang’an (modern day Xi’an), extended westward to the Mediterranean coast, bringing advanced crafts such as silk and ceramics to the Eurasian continent and completing the dissemination and integration of literature, dance, painting and other arts. From the first half of the 7th century to the middle of the 8th century, the prosperous Tang Dynasty (618-907) opened many trade ports and welcomed merchants from all over the world to trade with China. Since the Tang Dynasty, the Chinese have been referred to as the “Tang people” overseas. Today, the places where Chinese people gather and do business are often called “China Towns”. Xi’an was the political, cultural and economic center of the “prosperous Han and Tang dynasties”. And to this day, historical sites such as the Big Wild Goose Pagoda and the Huaqing Palace offer visitors a unique glimpse of that era of great prosperity. Xi’an has deep roots in history. As early as one million years ago, ancient humans known as “Lantian Apes” built communities there. In the spring of 1953, the Northwest Cultural Relics Sorting Team discovered a 50,000-square-meter ancient human settlement in Xi’an, known as the Banpo Site, with residential, tomb and pottery mill areas. A large number of living utensils and production supplies, as well as the remains of ancient humans excavated here prove it was a settlement of the Yangshao culture in the Neolithic Age more than 6,000 years ago. Archaeologists consider the Banpo Site to be one of the origins of the Chinese nation.
