Baby Lindesay was born without complications on January 22nd after a normal labour, a bouncing boy and a healthy weight too. Qi had been working on another baby project in the final weeks of her pregnancy, a needlepoint tapestry to mark the baby’s date and name. As a teacher I’d named hundreds of students, but never my own flesh and blood. Qi became increasingly frustrated with some of the names I had shortlisted. As soon as she heard them, she translated them phonetically, to see how they sounded in Chinese and thought about which characters would be most suited. A good name had to sound right, write well, and have an auspicious meaning. We decided on James for his first name; it was traditionally a popular Lindesay family name, and we’d shorten it to Jimmy, which translated well into Chinese characters as jie mi or ‘wonderful rice’. For his middle name I chose Alistair to reflect the Lindesay’s Scottish roots.
