Introducing Hotel Types
Hotel is a general concept in English. It can be subdivided into different categories. Words like inn, resort, and motel refer to different types of hotels. Today, we are going to share with you different hotel types, explaining concepts and giving some examples.
Hotel operations vary in size, function, complexity and cost. Most hotels and major hospitality companies have set industry standards to classify hotel types.
General categories include the following: (Luxury Hotels,) Boutique and Lifestyle Hotels, Full Service Hotels, Economy and Limited Service, Extended Stay, Timeshare and Motel.
Boutique hotels are smaller independent non-branded hotels that often contain upscale facilities in unique or intimate settings with full service accommodations.
Lifestyle hotels are branded properties that appeal to a guest with specific lifestyle or personal image. A key characteristic of boutique and lifestyle hotels is their focus on providing a unique guest experience as opposed to simply providing lodging.
Examples include W Hotels, Shangri-La Hotels (and Resorts) and Banyan Tree.
W Hotels was founded in 1998. It’s generally marketed toward a younger crowd. It attempts to include the letter W wherever possible. The lobbies are known as the “Living Room”. The swimming pool is known as “Wet”. The concierge and Service Express is known as “Whatever Whenever”. The laundry bag is known as “Wash”.
Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts was founded in 1971. Inspired by the legendary land featured in the novel, Lost Horizon, the name Shangri-La encapsulates the serenity and service for which the hotel is renowned worldwide.
Full service hotels often provide a wide range of guest services and on-site facilities. Commonly found amenities may include: on-site food and beverage, meeting and conference services and facilities, fitness center, and business center.
Examples include: Holiday Inn, Hilton, Marriott, and Hyatt Regency. Holiday Inn is a British-owned American brand. It has grown to be one of the world’s largest hotel chains, with over one thousand active hotels worldwide.
Hilton (Hotels & Resorts) is a global brand of full-service hotels. There are more than 570 Hilton (Hotels & Resorts) across six continents.
Economy and limited service hotels are small to medium-sized hotels that offer a very limited amount of on-site amenities and often only offer basic accommodations with little to no services. These facilities normally only cater to specific travelers, such as the budget-minded traveler. Limited service hotels often lack an on-site restaurant but may offer a limited complimentary food and beverage such as on-site continental breakfast service.
Examples include Ibis Budget, Aloft, Holiday Inn Express, and Days Inn.
Besides those kinds of hotels mentioned above, there is another kind called extended stay.
Extended stay hotels are small to medium-sized hotels that offer longer-term full-service accommodations compared to a traditional hotel. Extended stay hotels may offer non-traditional pricing methods such as a weekly rate that caters towards travelers in need of short-term accommodations for an extended period of time. On-site amenities are normally limited and lack an on-site restaurant. But there is usually a kitchen in the room.
Extended stay hotel brands include Staybridge Suites, Homewood Suites by Hilton, Residence Inn by Marriott, and Extended Stay America.
Timeshare are a form of property ownership involving the purchase and ownership of an individual unit of accommodation for seasonal usage. Timeshare resorts often offer amenities such as on-site restaurants, swimming pools, recreation grounds, and other leisure amenities.
Examples of timeshare brands include Hilton Grand Vacations, Marriott Vacation Club International, Westgate Resorts, and Disney Vacation Club.
Motel is an abbreviation for “motor hotel”. It is a small-sized, low-rise lodging similar to a limited service, lower-cost hotel, but typically with direct access to individual rooms from the car park. Motels are built to serve road travelers, including travelers on road trip vacations and workers who drive for their job, like truck drivers and travelling salespeople.
